There’s More Than Corn in Indiana……
Many of you may not understand the title of my post, which is the beginning of the Indiana Beach theme song – a rundown water park in Monticello, Indiana that as I child I only visited once. Its theme-song-laden commercials played relentlessly on radios across Indiana in the summers of my youth and as a result we begged our parents for a trip. On the day we visited my sister and I witnessed a water show where a woman (in full 80’s hair and makeup) skied to “She’s Like The Wind” – I don’t think we were too impressed but it did seem to solidify our interest in skiing behind the family boat.
It is always interesting to visit your childhood home to reminisce and learn nothing much has changed. The last few weeks I’ve been reconnecting with friends and having tons of my mom’s home cooking. I’ve been spending most of my time with my childhood friend Abby and her family including her four kids. Together we have revisited some of our favorite memories – a trip to Syds Bar in Noblesville for a few rounds of shuffleboard, a Phish show at old Deer Creek, dinners without the kids and swimming in the family pool. I even witnessed a “chicken release” at their house. They recently purchased 12 hens and a rooster that will start producing organic eggs for the family. Growing up Abby’s house provided hours of outdoor entertainment – complete with barn, chicken coops, four wheelers and an old garage housing a wooden ski boat — all still there today (except maybe the four wheelers, which we destroyed). We spent July 4th with their family – swapping old stories and discussing my adventures in China as the children ran around playing like Abby and I so many years ago.
